All the large kitchen appliances came with this place. I’m sure the oven is over 20 years old and maybe also the dishwasher. When I got here the dishwasher didn’t work and it took me ages to determine the main pump had rusted solid. An eBay replacement later and it’s been working for 6 years.

He was quite explicit about his goals, which were to make ordinary Americans aware of the US’ role in the Middle East and to oppose it, leading to a change in US foreign policy. Claiming that what he wanted was to weaken the US 25 years in the future with no evidence is not really something I’m going to entertain seriously.

But the same forces are at play everywhere, it’s just that in the US you have this extremely powerful arm of the media that straight up pushes lies. Those lies, however, play on the same fears and cognitive biases.

I don’t think it’s pure misogyny. I think in particular terfs are not motivated by misogyny but by fear. I think there’s also the fact that trans men just tend to pass better.

A know a few people who use them like a gopro - they record bike rides and stuff like that.

But you have misunderstood them - they have a very obvious recording LED, so they’re not designed to record without people’s knowledge. And they have some detection mechanism to tell (by reflected light) if you put tape over it or (electronically) if you break it, so modifying them to record secretly is not trivial.

If you actually want to record someone secretly, you could buy a button camera that an undercover journalist would use for a fraction of the price and not have to do any modification. It wouldn’t upload everything automatically to Instagram though, which I think for the target audience of the glasses is a big appeal…

Ostensibly it still happens. Losing your job to technology frees you up to work at something a machine can’t do, or spend more time doing something fun. But it depends on enough redistribution happening that you can still survive.

As a former archer there are a number of archery shops! I went to one place to buy something and found it very strange that it was just in a row of about 8 shops as part of a small housing estate’s little “high street” - alongside a takeaway, tattoo parlour, beauty salon, funeral director - the kind of thing you need a lot more of than archery shops!

It’s moved now, I assume something more normal has taken its old spot…

Actually I looked it up and it also sold thread, ribbons and stuff like that. I guess you’d call it a haberdashery. Maybe one just for wool is less common?

So productivity as measured today is only going to decrease by the amount corresponding to corporate profits? How do you figure? What is that amount - do you have an estimate?

As the other reply points out, profits are probably not what you care about anyway, because profits often just become the savings of ordinary people. So you want the proportion of profits that go to the already wealthy, plus the salaries of the mega wealthy.

But regardless, that figure is some finite number and you’re saying it’s more than the productivity we’re going to lose due to an ageing population: how do you know? Actual estimates for how much we could free up by getting rid of profits and CEOs are highly uncertain and often negative.

I think if we decrease productivity, it will cause problems.
