2·10 days agoJapanese loves abbreviating english loan words to two syllables (see also: remote control -> remokon, personal computer -> pasokon), so I’d suspect it was called pokemon colloquially very early and then the international branding caused it to become official.
Wikipedia seems to agree but i didn’t check sources

2·10 days agoMy neighbour’s child has no trouble crying at 3 am and waking up everyone in the 2 buildings that sleeps with an open window, so…
Said neighbour could maybe close their own window at least once the child starts crying but they seemingly don’t.
It stopped for a year but then they presumably haf another child.
It is pattern-matching. The next token matches the patterns in the training data.
That was meant to be sarcasm, maybe i should’ve put a tone marker, text only yada yada
Even without any benefits it’s technically free money even if it’s unlikely to be super impactful. I tend to micromanage my savings account and I’ve probably made like… 10 euros in additional interest thanks to credit cards.
So it’s just a credit card with an above average time limit on when you pay interest.
Of course, only people that want to buy something and don’t have enough money right now use credit cards.
You’re describing the type of person they prey on, the exact type that should stay far away from it unless they have truly no other options.

42·1 month agoShould supermarkets just sell alcohol to 10 year olds?
I think there are plenty of places where age gating makes sense as a concept, it really is mainly the data security that’s an issue. The other is that it should be somewhat circumventable, which I think mainly requires it not being tied to identity (so much like you could get someone older to buy you alcohol you could get someone else to verify your age).
What I think is bad is age gating social media instead of doing something about how harmful it is because clearly adults are not immune and all that does is make it harder for children to get important information.
That is something completely possible. Dunno about texas, but in germany the pumps generally let you pump and then you pay afterwards.

6·3 months agoIt’s a common practice, twitch does the same. It probably just scales with a very large amount of payments that would be needed otherwise, especially with all the shovelware steam gets these days.
Nah 30c is “i wish it was socially acceptable to just walk around naked because I am fucking dying in a t shirt and shorts” weather.
40 is just that but worse
I hope I never have to experience high humidity 40 I might just keel over and die
30f is viable for shorts but only with a thick-ish jacket on upper body

21·3 months agoUltimately the handling model and the way cops were implemented just making them very annoying killed it for me but yeah, I think overall it was trying to be different and did in some ways succeed. 1·3 months agoI see 0 reason to buy a used game over pirating it so I don’t really see what was lost. In both cases the devs get nothing, and buying from someone else is a hassle, and having large physical media instead of just some files is also annoying.
If we didn’t have steam we’d instead have the fucking epic games store or EA origin (or whatever they renamed it to). Just because valve isn’t perfect doesn’t mean any publically traded company wouldn’t have been so much worse. And they also did plenty of actual positives with SteamOS, Steam Deck, being the first to push consumer VR with the Vive…
100ms more is absolutely enough to be massive because it just subtracts from however long you need to recognize the other player after they become visible. Not to mention that in slower paced shooters, people might just remain stationary near a corner for very long, and you can’t magically know when they start to move. Also in games where you can die with one well placed shot it could be 10ms and still be a significant advantage because you just need to be faster than your opponent.
Afaik valorant does try to not send any info that won’t be needed, that doesn’t mean it’s immune to wallhacks, it just limits their effectiveness.
It died from matchmaking. Skill based MM helps a little but you still get people with different goals in the same game. Back when multiplayer was predominantly player hosted lobbies/servers, it was easy enough to find others that want to play the same way you do. And the same player could easily hop between servers depending on current mood. Now you get matched with some randoms and have to just deal with it.

It gets stricter the further south you go, where people are more religious. In bavaria shops close earlier and can’t sell alcohol after a certain time either. Overall the country is quite religious though, and especially historically has been extremely so. And something like a sunday where almost no one has to work isn’t without benefits, so it won’t just go away. Even shops being open on saturday past early afternoon was something that was only allowed in the early 2000s iirc.
