2-3 years ago, I would’ve bet money that the future was gonna be bluebook exams for every subject, but clearly I was wrong. I don’t get how you successfully cheat with ChatGPT in a productive way if you’re writing on paper with the teacher watching, call me old fashioned.

I’d agree with that if we’re discussing a persistent nuisance or aggressively filming in someone’s face, certainly. In the context of the article, I’m not seeing much that justifies the allegation.

It’s even more ridiculous than that: harassment is by definition unwanted, repeated disruptive conduct.

Filming someone from a respectable distance in public does not meet that standard, but more importantly, the flock employee did absolutely nothing explicit whatsoever to express to the reporter that his conduct was unwanted.

This is a false police report, clear and simple.

Might be a bit of a hot take: the spirit is alive but the common form drifted away from this old-school ideal.

Punk as a genre has stopped being a self-contained monolith, and started blending into other styles. There’s still a pool of traditionalists, but they’re a relative minority.

In the 90s, it bleed into hard rock (Nirvana). In the aughts, the main fork was emo-punk (a la Conor Oberst). The 2010s had a big post-punk wave (Parquet Courts, Viagra Boys). Meanwhile, on a longer timeline, industrial EDM/noise music has been the modern incarnation of the spirit of the hardcore subgenre (Death Grips), and folk-punk has been a consistent niche of its own.

And even on top of these more specific splinters, the standard indie rock genre has grown to encompass more “soft-punk” elements in recent decades (Modest Mouse, Wolf Parade).

You’ll see plenty of people posting on there about how “the followers” only appear when said poster has just finished smoking their bowl of meth. They’ll ask: Are the stalkers following them to steal their crank, or is the meth opening a vision of true reality and “unmasking” the followers?

It’s all about the rate of change: neoliberal globalization has brought down wages across industries, so fewer good jobs are left, and the not-so-good ones barely keep up the same standard of living.

From a neutral historical perspective, some serious pearl-clutching about jobs is not ill-founded.

As you say, people in the past facing these circumstances didn’t all commit suicide. Yet some did it explicitly, some did it indirectly with alcohol or other vices, others just lived less fulfilling lives than they otherwise would have. Nonetheless, we are very much encouraging deaths of despair en masse with our current societal outlook.
