Senior citizens become people to take care of, that won’t/can’t work and I don’t mean that in a “dear God consider the GDP” way, but literally just people who will not be contributing but still require services, in fact likely a lot more than normal.

It ends up being a lot of neglected senior citizens dying in horrible ways.

However it is going to be painful as fuck for a lot of people and I’d hardly call it heaven. It might trigger the next depression for all we know. People think things are bad now and hard to afford and we haven’t even seen the long term effects of this crazy fucking investment behavior and dumbass tariffs. The AI dust bowl is coming and our costs of living will skyrocket from what we consider high right now.

Bitcoin doesn’t require any business propping it up. It is a decentralized ledger.

As long as people trade with it, it has value. No one needs to advertise it. No one needs to market it. You still see malicious scams take advantage of using it to exfiltrate funds. Ransomware still demands it.

It actually works pretty damn well at what it does. People love to hate on it but I never saw it going away or any bubble there. It was always a decentralized technology. The US could collapse tomorrow and Bitcoin would still be around and valuable.

The bulk of “AI layoffs” I agree are bullshit. They are using it as an excuse to increase quarterly profits while not signalling any weakness to investors, and in fact voicing layoffs in a way that make them sound competitive.

However … I work in software and am married to someone in the art industry. It’s definitely cut jobs in ways that might not be sustainable, but still cut jobs. They are barely hiring junior devs anymore. They think they can get away with tiny teams of seniors that use AI constantly.

And the art industry is changed forever. They simply don’t need certain artist jobs as much anymore. I know someone who would work with these people who buy images from photographers. They used to charge a ton for licensing. Now they skip the photographers and use AI and save a fuck ton of money doing it, and have actual artists clean up the AI artifacts. There is a lot less value in photography for certain industries.

And pay attention to writers who post about their job just disappearing. AI is being used to pump out writing material that used to be a career.

Is it sustainable? Maybe not. I think people have an eye for the AI slop and will spend less money on cheap looking services that prove they cut costs anywhere they can. But jobs have been cut.

Bitcoin isn’t a bubble. Bubbles aren’t just technologies that are controversial which some people hype up.

Bubbles are purely about investment behavior, whether the tech works or not. It’s an investment environment where businesses are propped up by investor funds and they’re not profitable, and they keep growing and growing because people keep unsustainably investing in them, until the money runs out and then the businesses sometimes close overnight like WebVan did, because they couldnt afford literal payroll anymore.

Lots of startups will be in the red for a bit but these companies take it to the extreme. Pets.com was shipping petfood at below cost. OpenAI and Anthropic are basically selling tokens below cost. They’re competing for data and not profitable.

They invested a trillion dollars into AI and plan a trillion more in 2027. The US economy is basically propping this up. This is not at all like the crypto shit. I’m sure there were a few small crypto companies that collapsed overnight after a few specific investors realize they were being scammed, but that’s not what a bubble is. This is all the investors suddenly realizing AI isn’t worth it at once or just not having the funds to keep pumping it up.

Bitcoin didn’t go away, even if there were small over hyped bullshit crypto businesses. The internet sure as fuck didn’t go away even though the dot com bubble was real as hell. AI won’t necessarily go away either but we will face economic hell when they stop investing in it like it’s the next industrial age.

I mean, it has cut jobs already… and replaced human talent with cheap slop.

It can make “art”. That art sucks, and is obvious where it’s used. Everyone hates the AI ads.

It can make “music”. Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s being used in places some people haven’t noticed, but probably ads or something where we tune out.

But the lie the investors bought was that it’d replace human labor. And less so, it’s the new “industrial age”. Nah. It’s like the industrial age in some respects, but for small sectors of labor where you don’t give a shit that the product is worse.

I feel like people make this weird mistake inspired by scifi that, if a tech becomes possible, it automatically fulfills some sci-fi prophecies about changing humanity. I think we keep making this mistake, and end up realizing well maybe it’s a bit more complicated, maybe there’s a cost we didn’t see, maybe there’s fundamental limits to its potential we didn’t see.

Just because you make a chatbot that can code doesn’t mean it can improve its own code exponentially. It just hasn’t, and not for the lack of their trying.

To put things in perspective, imagine it being way, way worse in 5 years and the point you are at right now is the least struggling you’ve been through that you can remember. You might look fondly at these days, before shit hit the fan.

Struggling a bit more financially but I prepared for this tbh. I expected shit to get bad, and still think it will get worse.

Nah I read it all and fully agree. 🫡 Wishing you the best American sibling wherever you are. I still have some hope things can turn around but it’s hard to see the light right now with corruption as rampant as it is.

It’s always a reminder to appreciate what you have right now, because I do think things will get worse before they get better. I don’t take the relative peace, shelter, running water and electricity for granted, and I similarly shouldn’t be terrified of a day coming when all that isn’t available. Just good to prep some emergency cash and stuff when you can and ride out the bullshit best you can.

I think I’m just sad that Trump won over as many Americans as he did with hate rhetoric, but can’t say we weren’t warned that this sentiment was building.

In the US, we teach that communism is a mortal enemy that only leads to starvation and we elect greedy oligarchs that promise life will get better eventually while they fill their pockets. Socialism is seen as the extreme anti-State solution where no one starves and everyone is educated. And any evidence to the contrary is considered conservative propaganda.

There’s little room for nuance in the US. We went so far right that it feels like you have to move all the way left to fix things. And the more they call socialism the enemy, the better it sounds to people. The youth grow up thinking, either they support Trump or they’re a socialist… He’s probably doing more for socialism than American socialists ever did.

I swear just having free healthcare in the 90s could have prevented all this.
