Exactly - go in for a pack of socks, come out with socks, a hotdog, and a nine-foot TV.

memes@lemmy.world•Are we just making up language rules as we go?English
6·4 days agoI would say “non-lockable” means can’t be locked, and “unlockable” means can be changed from locked to unlocked, implying also being lockable.
But to answer the question, yes we are making up language as we go along. For one thing we’ve always done that, but recently the trend has accelerated as people strive to reduce complex ideas to simple, overgeneralized slang to avoid having to think as much or do as much thumb-typing.

memes@lemmy.world•Number on or number off which one do you prefer??English
42·4 days agoBecause all I need to know is if my battery looks low enough to worry about, like the gas tank gauges on most cars. Nobody needs to see the exact number of gallons or liters of fuel they have left. “Close to F great, middle fine, close to E bad” has been doing the trick for well over a century. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with people who like seeing an exact battery percentage, but it really isn’t necessary.

32·5 days agoAnd yet none of the boomers I know think or act like that. Whaddya know - people are individuals and aren’t defined by the public perception of their generation. It’s almost like people deserve for you to treat them as the individuals they are instead of regurgitating memes about them.

69·5 days agoYeah it’s not like boomers showed up for anti-war marches, anti-racism marches, environmental marches… no, nothing like that, we just said “fuck you entitled brats”. This manufactured hate is as ignorant as criticizing young people for not having kids, or thinking they all sit around eating avocado toast.

Technology@lemmy.world•Texas slams on the brakes for 1,800 data centers, power grid requirements are 5 times higher than peak record demand — 474 gigawatts of power requests are now subject to new moratoriumEnglish
10·8 days agoSeems like a couple summers ago Texans were sweltering for lack of electric power to run their AC. Checking grid capacity should have been the job of whichever branch of state gov’t handed out these 1800 permits. Was the approval fee a box of steaks?

10·9 days agoYou can make one million dollars and never pay taxes! All it takes are these two simple words: “I forgot”. That’s right! And it works for other things as well: “I forgot armed robbery was illegal.” - Steve Martin
