Technology@lemmy.world•SpaceX Stock Plummets Below IPO Price as $1 Trillion VanishesEnglish
21·8 hours agoSo much of this is blogger brain, with people hearing rumors based on clickbait headlines, and having no idea how the money moved around.
The major index that bought into SpaceX on IPO day was the NASDAQ-100. S&P and DOW indexes have not yet included it.
While US ETFs currently own around $16 billion worth of the stock across 179 ETF products, that’s around 1% of the total market cap of the firm. The single largest shareholder - at around 44% of the market cap - is Elon himself. Another 20-odd% is owned by various private equity funds that are a whose-who of the modern tech sector - Google, Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund, Sequoia Capital, and Andreessen Horowitz - along with your standard assortment of Wall Street banks - Baillie Gifford, Baron Capital Group, T. Rowe Price, and Valor Equity Partners.
Nobody has actually cashed out yet, in any meaningful capacity. But because the stock slipped off it’s IPO high, we’re getting a bunch of screaming know-nothings who insist they’ve all been robbed.

The stock hit $123 on Friday. It’s still got a $1.6T market cap. I have no idea where they got that headline from.

7·9 hours agoLower levels have “recall elections” for this explicit reason.
States have rolled a lot of that back, or made it so prohibitively expensive to attempt that only billionaires can oust a state politician they don’t like.
I might argue that the problem isn’t Fetterman specifically, but the stakes at play when someone like Fetterman is a singular representative for 13M people. One Fetterman in a sea of politicians would be annoying but incidental. One in a tiny cabal that’s on a tipping point of partisan control is glaring in it’s corruption.

1·1 day agoTexas aside, it’s definitely a selfish lack of voting.
Texas isn’t the only state with abysmal election practices.
There’s no way in the world outcomes wouldn’t be different if at least 80% of them turned out to first primaries then the actual elections.
I think Democratic turnout has to be predicated by a certain understanding that you’ll get at least some of what you asked for by participating.
If you’re in a 60/40 district where people kick sand in your eyes when you lose, and you always lose, then there’s very little incentive to show up.
And, when you look at all the people who were turning out in the 80s/90s for third parties and independent candidates, only to get blamed and screamed at and shat on for participating outside the two party system? I can’t say I’m shocked to see them give up on the public sector and focus exclusively on private accumulation as a political remedy.
Sorry but I’m tired of their shit
And they’re tired of yours.
“Things would be better if you voted harder!” is a promise that is consistently broken.
At some point, it’s your duty to deliver if you want someone to keep turning out for you.

1·1 day agoit’s all caused by a selfish lack of voting…
I’ve seen far too many election irregularities in Texas, up to and including the arrest of poor black residents on spurious charges, to write this off entirely as “selfish” lack of voting.
I will not be surprised if we see Talarico and friends eat shit in another Blue Wave year, as Abbott’s goons pull thousands of extra votes from countries with no election monitoring and flimsy election infrastructure. Or if we get a wave of broken machines, extraordinarily long lines, and missing boxes of ballots in the big urban centers.
You don’t have to go all the way back to The Brooks Brothers Riot to find rot under the electoral floorboards. But that’s not the result of China or Russia or Iran or Transgender Muslim Communist Athletes or Time Traveling Space Aliens or whatever the scapegoat of choice happens to be this year.
They know it takes some hardship to fix now, they aren’t prepared to deal with that so they’re lashing out.
America’s greatest vice is in assuming it’s always someone else’s problem to solve.

politics @lemmy.world•CNN refused to air Donald Trump's speech due to 'history of false statements'English
37·1 day agoSo much of this is just the result of turnout. And so much of turnout hinges on how efficiently the campaigns operated.
The big difference between Obama, Hillary, Biden, and Harris is who knew how to organize the machinery to get their supporters to the polls in the highest numbers and who didn’t.
After that, you’re just living in a country where 45% of the voting base consistently goes with the most naked fascist on the ballot, because they’ve been programmed to hate hate hate outsiders. And if you can’t juice enough of the remaining 55%, fascism is what you get.

I mean, the funny thing is that the UON-B (The Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists – Bandera faction) has unequivocally been operating as a stateless paramilitary seeking political reform through violence. Not unlike the Houthi Rebel movement or Hamas, after the IDF killed all their civilian bureaucrats and political functionaries.
But because the term carries “brown person acting badly” connotation, people reflectively reject the idea that a white person can earn the title.
