5·1 day agoI’m not sure I agree with the idea that the necessary level of compute will be made available to the average person. We are already well into a paradigm where the average “PC” is an iPad or similar, with Google locking down Android and Microsoft… being Microsoft, I just don’t have any optimism that the future will have the same kind of access to personal computing power or even software access. The “tin-foil hat” part of my brain says that the purchasing years worth of chips output is part of a conspiracy to keep consumers and potential competitors at bay more than it’s a requirement for new models.
I hope I am wrong, but I am not holding my breath.

111·1 day agoThis is very much the problem I have. We have officially reached the point where the average artist on Deviant Art has less intellectual property rights than the average even LLC let alone megacorp like Disney.
I hate to say it but the US as we knew it has never existed. It’s always been propaganda to cover up centuries of exactly these kinds of atrocities. The only difference now is the people running the show have decided they no longer need to hide behind a mask of altruism.

6321·1 day agoAI like this is very quickly becoming the One Ring in my mind. Like there’s a bunch of people who have convinced themselves that they can use this plagiarism box in a good way, that the outcome will somehow justify the means. But the reality is that this machine was created by evil for evil reasons and as it stands right now you can’t use Claude or ChatGPT or any of that shit and not participate in the plagiarism, in the outright theft of all of the art and creativity of humanity, and the destruction of our environment.
I wish that more people would understand that the jump from the novelty of Watson beating Ken Jennings on Jeopardy to here wasn’t technological innovation. It was purely capitalism.

21·1 day agoYeah, I’m quickly seeing a future where stuff like this AI rewrite of the Adobe suite may need to be distributed as the model that makes the software and not the software itself. If that becomes the case then we really will have entered into a world where tech bros control everything as you will quickly find yourself in a world where you can’t use the software if you don’t have the compute to make it.

1·1 day agoGenerations are limited to countries or handfuls of countries. Cohorts are created by shared experiences and those experiences are rarely global. For instance in Russia the Gen X equivalent is called “the last Soviet children” and as you can imagine their experiences aren’t exactly the same as those who make up Gen X.

Huh? I think you need to pay better attention to user names.

Technology@lemmy.world•Tech Workers Have Long Resisted Unions. Will AI and Politics Change the Equation? | KQEDEnglish
16·2 days agoNone of the tech workers I know have been resistant to the idea of unions and neither am I. I would say it’s the exact opposite actually, like there is always some reason I can’t join whatever union or that we can’t form a new one for tech workers. So you end up with this tiny group of devs in the CWA, and this other tiny group in the UAW, and a bunch more who work at a place that has a contract with the IBEW but they can’t join that and on and on and that’s before we even get started on the number of people who are now considered contractors and can’t join whatever union anyway.
I’m not sure why a community would do that, like are there any that restrict voting? It’s a fundamental part of the platform.
If we waited until everybody was ready for every feature we would never get any features. I’m really not sure that “third party apps aren’t finished yet” is an argument against using a feature of the platform.
Personally the issue I have is that this is what crossposting is for. Posting it over and over just takes up more space on servers that are largely paid for by donations.

Technology@lemmy.world•Intel to release new CPUs on old socket in early 2027 says Gigabyte - memory crisis making DDR4 desirable againEnglish
5·2 days agoI think a really good ‘for instance’ of what we are talking about is the Pentium Overdrive released in the early-mid 90s. It was a Pentium class processor designed to fit the 486 (previous generation, also where the Pent part of Pentium came from) socket. They have never not been able to backport new instruction sets they just don’t and now we have even more evidence of that.

81·3 days agoJust throwing it out there that only a tiny fraction of GenXers were old enough vote in the 1980 or even the 1984 elections. I am in my 30s and only one of my parents was old enough (and definitely did not vote for Reagan, I have seen their Mondale button), the other first voted for President in 1988.

14·4 days agoI would be shocked if that wasn’t the point. Governments have a long history of stoking those with a “radical” agenda in the name of having a bogeyman. See Indian Removal, Pearl Harbor and Japanese Internment, the Crack “Epidemic”, October 6th, etc…

Somebody suggested to me a while back that these people have a submission kink but no other outlet for it because of sexually repressive religions etc., and it’s been harder and harder for me to not fall back on that explanation for lack of any better one.
