I’ll admit that I’ve set up a few international job alerts just in case I get lucky, but I wouldn’t move without good work unless I was truly in a situation where I needed asylum.

These are just not new things at all in US society. Maybe he thinks it’s new because he’s never experienced it before. But it shows a profound ignorance of American history to say something like that.
