What words come from Celtic languages? I thought it was all Germanic with Latin and French words being borrowed later.

As a French-speaker, it has always been my instinctual understanding from seeing the word and knowing how English has taken words from Latin and French.

English-speakers are really unlucky to have one of the most ambiguous word for situations where the need for clarity is of such great importance, especially as it concerns safety, even saving lives.

That sounds like a lot of gold!
Romanian
dracul
That sounds so stereotypical lol.

Lol.
How much tip do you want to leave?
$4237
I can imagine the customers would react pleasantly to leaving this uninentended tip.

Sometimes I see comments downvoted a lot and I can’t understand why.

This is so infuriating.

Who in their right mind would deny that Israel exists? This is at the level of the Finland Conspiracy.

It’s fine. You just have to imagine that the existence of the Alot of Terrorist Attacks can be blamed on US foreign policy.

2 is different because it’s a term used nowadays, as in your reply. I’ve never uprooted myself and went somewhere empty to build a house. So, I’m not a settler in the first sense. I’m a settler in the second sense, as I’m not part of any native nation.

We’re referring to two different meanings here.
A settler, as in, someone who comes to settle land that has been emptied through war, disease, genocide, etc. This one, we see as negative
And settler in opposition to native. Of course in that sense it’s not negative. At least, I, as a settler, don’t see it as negative, it’s just a neutral descriptive and useful term.

Yea, I was wondering right now, is there anyone in the US who has an internal narrative in their mind around the Iran war that makes it appear somewhat sensible?

I was thinking more of the globalized market for oil.
If Russia can export less refined oil, that can encourage the construction of new refineries elsewhere. This could negate the impact of drone attacks on reducing CO2 emissions.
But as others have said, there’s demand destruction that can have an effect.

They can be built outside Russia.

I don’t think it’s part of Lemmy per se, rather it’s an app feature. I use Voyager.

I just want to tell you I always love reading your comments. They’re always thoughtful and interesting. I know you with the tag “Knows Chinese history” and when I see this tag, China-related or not, I know it will be good.

There’s a lot of denominations under the “Presbyterian” name. Some of them are typical conservatives, but others are progressive, marrying gay couples and ordaining women and openly gay pastors.
As a non-native English speaker I sometimes struggle with those words added after verbs: off, on, up, down, etc.
