  • Oh boy, where do I even begin:

    1. Federation. People have no idea what it is, which means that they have to familiarize themselves with all these technical concepts just to create an account.

    2. Servers. Most mastodon servers are locked, and you have to petition the admins to let you in, which often implies waiting more than a day. In other sites, you can create an account in 5 seconds, so mastodon is at a disadvantage.

    3. Lack of an algorithm. This implies people won’t see the content they like, which means they have to go and actively look for content. Most people don’t want to spend time doing that, they just want to log in, laugh at funny memes ans look at pretty pictures.

  • The real reason is that German unification was done poorly and it benefited West Germany in a very disproportionate manner.

Most people and jobs migrated to west Germany and East Germany was left to rot.

Couple that with the fact that communism/socialism became a big taboo in Europe and capitalism’s faults were completely ignored, even when it was visibly failing.

When you ban and stigmatize the left so much, people will turn to the only side that actually acknowledges something is wrong, and in this case, only the far right has done so.

  • If something bad came from the Soviet dissolution (besides the extreme decline of living standards in many of those countries) is that it completely killed any left-wing ideals in the west. Unions, welfare and common good were seen as “defeated” ideas, because capitalism had won. People still haven’t recovered from the “capitalism won” mentality, so anything that comes even close to left wing is immediately shut down
