Mandem’s basically in American English as well, we just say it a little different. It’s a shortening of man and them, as in your boys. As Vince Staples says “know a change gone come like Obama 'n them say, but they’re shooting every day round my mama 'n them way”.

Personally know a faculty member at Barnard who fled the Holocaust as a child. Sure he must just be delighted to witness such terrifying bullshit. Fuck these monsters.
cazssiew@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why does it seem like so many (young) men these days flock over to types like Andrew Tate?2·3 months agoI feel like the contradictions are the point. The most desirable trait of people like Tate or Trump is their impunity. They keep getting away with heinous shit, it’s the one thing that makes them demonstrably powerful, despite being disgusting, unimpressive scumbags.

The last straw for me was when he went on a rant asking ‘what does NASA even do anyway, just let SpaceX take over’. Typical silicon valley bubble self-aggrandizing, thinking tech disruptors have anything to do with actual scientists, the worst kind of hypercapitalist obscurantist bullshit.

cazssiew@lemmy.worldto World News@lemmy.world•Greece stopped by 24-hour general strike over cost of livingEnglish2·8 months agoThere’s good reason for that, outside of a few industries, American unions were pretty comprehensively dismantled by the likes of Reagan. We’re resilient creatures, we’ll tolerate a lot before burning out, but people will also demand better conditions if they’re shown they can have a say. We just don’t have many contemporary examples of workers wielding that kind of power in the states. The guilds in the movie industry are a steadfast counterexample, though, and united auto workers have been showing some muscle recently. There’s no denying it’s a really tough battle, but people will fight back if they’re given some hope.
cazssiew@lemmy.worldto World News@lemmy.world•Greece stopped by 24-hour general strike over cost of livingEnglish2·9 months agoDisregarding clinicallydepressedpoochie’s weird blend of a hero complex and defeatist puritanism, the concept of one big union organizing strikes across trades and states, while never really successful, did play a significant part in galvanizing workers and popularizing unions. Even in smaller countries where general strikes are more common, they remain isolated events, but they do a lot to promote the potential unions have in giving workers a voice, and grow unions’ ranks by increasing enrollment.
Both can be true.

Despite all the proof to the contrary, we continue to think meritocracy is a thing. The prosperity gospel is one of the more overt expressions of that belief: if you’re rich, it’s obviously because you’re just the best, smartest little cookie and you deserve it all. What other reasons could there possibly be?
