Technology@lemmy.ml•So what I'm reading is that they're either making a gentleman's agreement to let Chinese labs run circles around them or the easy gains are over and they're now running into a wall
4·3 days agoI doubt the Chinese companies will comply, even if they agree on the surface. Whoever releases the most powerful model when the truce ends, will have the advantage. If anything, research and training will continue, releases will slow down.
I worked customer service for match for almost a decade, so I can give you a few pointers.
People leave when they’re the only ones in an area. So giving them something to do is important to retain people. The best idea I’ve ever saw was having a forum where people can discuss any topic. I think Match also tested public chatrooms and streams, but i didn’t really dealt with those. You’ll have to deal with forum drama and moderation, but some people will be very engaged.
Speaking of, moderation will take lots of time and effort. People sick. Make sure that moderation tools are as robust as the matching ones.
I think those are the general ones. Best of luck!

Epic’s anti cheat support Linux, the CEO refuses(-ed) to use it in their own games because they hate Linux.
Talking out of my ass, i think this shift is one of two things. The first would be their customers wanting to target Steam Deck having doubts of Epic’s anti cheat capacity in Linux. If they don’t support it in their own games (and Rocket League had Linux support before being bought out). The other is they want to launch their own Linux based console with their Store pre-installed. They’ve always wanted to have a store front, to the point they challenged Google and Apple for a bigger piece of the pie. Today, this last part is unlikely considering the price of components.

Technology@lemmy.world•The Pollution Being Churned Out by AI Data Centers Is So Severe That It's Almost IncomprehensibleEnglish
2·1 month agoThey shouldn’t be. One of the issue the sheer size and volume, they’re being built based only on speculation not actual need (all the ssd/ram/gpu are sitting in warehouses waiting for these DC to be built — if they’re fabricated at all). They’re also being built where it’s cheap, not where they would be needed (industrial and urban areas) just to save money, externalize costs, and avoid regulations.

24·1 month agoAI data centers use complex calculations. Why bring up websites or VPS? these are data centers are no issue, their footprints are small and don’t require much energy to work, unlike the AI data centers.

They’ve been partners ever since WSL launched, it was initially only available with Ubuntu.
Trust that Microsoft will send upstream any feature they don’t want to maintain themselves. Slowly, but surely there will be featured that only work on Windows. Then, when they believe they don’t have to play nice anymore, they’ll close off the code.
