You don’t have to go back that far, just look at digital music. People were trading files on Napster, and the music industry was having a fit. Steve Jobs opened the iTunes Music Store and started selling all files for .99, people started gobbling them up, and piracy went down. Then along came Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, etc., and most people are happy to pay. Why, because it’s so much easier and convenient than trying to pirate it and get it on your phone/player.

Don’t get me wrong, people still pirate, but the percentage is low compared to what it was before these easy legal options. People will always take the easiest route, legal or illegal.

My wife & I were going into a restaurant one afternoon, and there was a man in a wheelchair with no legs below the knee sitting next door at the exit to Walmart. His sign said that he was a homeless vet. As we started in, I told my wife to hold on, and I ran over and gave him $20. When I got back, my wife said, “Did you just give that guy 20 bucks?” I said, “Yep, why?” She said, “You know he’s just going to spend it on alcohol.” I said, “I hope so, the guy ain’t got no legs, let him have a good drink!”

Where I live, there isn’t much walking, but the homeless stand at intersections and hold signs and look at you while you wait on the light to change.

My wife, who is a much better person than I, will keep $5 McDonald’s gift cards in her vehicle and sometimes hand those out. She says that there is a McDonald’s within walking distance of almost anywhere in town, and that $5 is enough to get a couple of things off the value menu and a free cup of water. If they’re really homeless and hungry, at least they will have something to eat.

Man, I really like PieFed. I have been on a small local-ish Lemmy instance for about a year and a half, and I have enjoyed it, but PieFed is a much better front end for Lemmy. The owner of my instance has deployed PieFed, I’m helping to beta test it and get it stable, and I plan on staying here.

I left Reddit the day the API ban went into effect and Apollo no longer worked. And to be clear, it wasn’t just that Apollo quit working, but it was also the way the dev was treated. He was trying to negotiate with Reddit to keep the app alive. Reddit & Spez not only weren’t negotiating in good faith, but then tried to make Christian look like the villain. Unfortunately he recorded everything and brought receipts proving Reddit’s lies, and that was enough to make me walk away.

I spend the majority of my doomscrolling on Lemmy, and the only time I go back to Reddit is for live game sports threads (specifically for American football), which haven’t really seemed to catch on over here. I have done a couple of playoff games with Mastodon hashtags, and that worked pretty well, but for regular season games, I participate in the Reddit live threads. But daily reading/commenting? It’s over here now, and I’m plenty happy.

I’d hire a lawyer and hit them for reimbursement of the $500 fee, my legal fees, slander for claiming I’m a smoker, punitive damages, and any another other monetary penalty I could think of. I’m sure I could find a lawyer that would be salivating over this.
