But they’re such honest and decent folk!!!

What is this showing?
Just fuck nestle for existing.
Without water-based lube of course!
Damn, Coca Cola is consuming all of our water, soon we will have nothing left to drink.
? If you mean this funny there is nothing funny about it. For now we have enough and do not need to buy coca cola. What if they have a brand kitchen water so you can rinse you veggies. We can not imagine water shortages but this will soon be a thing.
I remember looking into this years ago, desalination is a reasonable solution (for houshold usage in developed nations) at only a few times the ridiculously low water cost we have now. Agriculture is the issue because it currently depends on insane amounts of cheap water dispite there being more water efficient methods of growing crops (indoor hydroponics).

Desalinisation is not an ideal solution. That hypersalinated waste water gets pumped back into the ecosystem, and it does incalculable damage
Impossible. The city/county knows and just aren’t telling people. It’s collusion.
That is usually true, but I’m pretty sure there was a story a while back where inspectors found a water line being tapped and no record of it every having been done or approved. And for power, some of them are using their own power generation, despite how dirty that is, so the city/county would have no record of how much power is used.
There is absolutely massive amounts of corruption and collusion happening though. Not trying to minimize that. Just want a complete picture of how much the oligarchs are willing to cheat, bend, or break the system to achieve their goals.
Hardly likely to be the default
I agree. However, people should be aware that even if their city or county reports water and power usage, the numbers are useless without third party independent verification. They have already shown they are happy to break the law, cheat the system, steal, hide, whatever it takes.
Rich people “rent” talent. That’s what money is good for.
That is WHY the rich want AI. AI allows “wealth” to access “talent” without letting talent access wealth.
Now what rich person would NOT want that?
And what poor person would want that?
See the problem yet?
The plagerism machine can never accurately simulate human art. It would never have the imagination required to make great things.
My worry is not if it can make great things. That was never going to be possible from a system that cant create original thoughts.
My worry is if it can make art that is “good enough”. If some middle manager eschews hiring an artist for some project and the results that AI spits out are enough that they still profit, that’s where the damage is done.
isn’t producing better art the point of starving artists? or am I misunderstanding the phrase?
I’ve been an artist for over 4 decades, studied art, taught art… and you are correct. While AI almost assuredly won’t be revolutionizing art, music, movies, culture (beyond a temporary “ai is so neat, lol” trend), it doesn’t have to in order to collapse those industries. Those industries move in cycles and a shit ton of elements, trends are repeated throughout history. So while occasionally an artist or group of artists change everything and redirect the course of their fields, things always cycle back to some basic ideas and forms that previous generations have already explored, so humans are move than happy to just enjoy what’s already been, slightly tweaked. Every story is in Homer’s Odyssey, or in Shakespeare’s prose. Every advert uses basics elements to entice, to attract, to maintain attention, to be memorable. Every genre of music builds on the same chords and fuses elements from generations past.
Ai doesn’t have to innovate and reinvent entire industries, it just has to “disrupt” them enough by getting good enough to be just good enough, and that will make already slim profit margins and already bare markets untenable for already starving artists. All that will be left will be those that are already rich, already entrenched and employed by the largest corporations that pay for artisanal craftsmanship, or those that are wealthy enough to cosplay as serious artists for self gratification. None of those will produce satisfying art, none will do it for necessity, they’ll do it for selfish and opulent reasons, which results in soulless and gauche art that might as well never be seen by the public and just circulate the walls of the private spaces enjoyed solely by the ruling class.
You can stop worrying.
Business ALWAYS chooses the quick and easy (cheap) way. Have you seen those quarterly reports?
Artificial intelligence is not artistic, for that you need artificial empathy.
Art is the distillation of empathy. A “poetry” of emotions.
Good art will comfort the disturbed while at the same time disturb the comfortable.
As if this is a surprise. This falls under Rule 34. Talk about getting fucked.
LessWrong “Water Hoax” posters incoming!
The bigger issue is really when you use a lot of power you have a lot of negotiation leverage on cost. Particularly in unregulated markets like Texas. So the datacenters pay the absolute lowest rate for power.
Don’t you think that’s something better to focus our energy on trying to put pressure to fix?
But waterhoax?
Don’t you think that’s something better to focus our energy on
I’ve got rooftop solar to cut my electricity bill, but no real options for my water utility
