It’s more than just V for Vendetta. Anonymous chose the Guy Fawkes mask from the movie V for Vendetta both because it was available and because it represented their activism efforts.
Oh yay, the perfect opportunity to share an obscure, useless fact I know.
The origin of the word “Guy”, as both a name and a term, is the man, Guy Fawkes. His name is the first record of the word “guy” being used in any context.
Following the gunpowder treason and plot, which was unsuccessful, and of which he was not the leader, he became in/famous for it anyway, so much so that it became an annual tradition to tar, feather, and execute him in effigy. These effigies were referred to as “guys” and would universally portray Fawkes in an unflattering way, being gaudy and made from trash. In reference to these effigies, people began to point at some disheveled looking person and remark, “look at that Guy over there”.
As time went on, the expression remained in use, but Fawkes faded from memory. People less familiar with him, his history, and the effigies began using the term “guy” to refer to any man.
he is the origin of the word “guy” to refer to a general person, but he is definitely not the first person to ever be named Guy. for example, Sir Guy of Warwick is a character from English stories dating to the 13th century
Do we know if it was pronounced like the French do, similar to “ghee?”
Or Guy of Gisburne.
As someone old enough to be considered a fossil this is hilarious.
The answer being “V for Vendetta” and the “Anonymous Mask” being “What the guy in the movie wore.”
Older I suppose, the comic was easily 10 years ahead of the film. I still have mine in a box somewhere. They’re amazing
I need to read them I think, one of my favorite movies
TIL, we use the phrase “roll up the window” because early car windows had manual cranks that to be turned to open or close them.
As someone who grew up with those windows, I just realized I’m an unc now
TIL there’s ppl that don’t know this and I’m old as fuck
There’s kids that don’t know what the save icon is and wouldn’t know what you’re talking about if you mention the pound sign
And nobody likes when you drop octothorpe into casual conversation
I’m pretty pissed off thinking about these kids. Get off my lawn!
Wtf my car still has these and its from 2007. And 2007 was only 2 years ago so.
Even power windows have a gear that rolls to open or close them.
How about the fairly universal “save” icon being a floppy disk icon even now decades after they became obsolete?
Shorter answer: 4chan.
Nah, it predates 4Chan
Wait I thought that was obvious and I’m not a fossil.
Got some bad news for you bub.
“why is Jesus Christ associated with the guy on the crucifix?”
I think it’s actually the other way around. “Why is Anon Mask associated with Guy Fawkes?”
The answer, as most people in the thread have already pointed out, is the comic/movie V For Vendetta, which an amazing movie everyone should watch.
I feel like making an obvious mistake like this in a heading is purposefully done to drive up engagement.
Since when is Guy Fawkes “Anonymous?”
Maybe read the linked article

Heh, it’s funny because it’s true.
If you think it’s bad here, try Bluesky. It’s like the lefty, smarter version of FB, and yet no one reads the article. Weirded me out after being here where people tear into the thing.
Thanks for the snark. My point is that the title is backwards.
How so? Wasn’t really trying to be a jerk, but someone posted an article about how/why there’s the association and you asked if there was an association. Seemed weird.
No, my point is that it’s a Guy Fawkes mask, not an “Anonymous Mask.”
Ah, okay, fair enough
For those of us who know… Anon is associated with the Guy Fawks movie character mask.
They (big collective so they being very loosely used) also posted pictures and some videos in the beginning where a couple of them wore the masks themselves. Really wish my brain worked at all as to where I even saw those
V, wears a mask of Guy Fawkes’s face to both maintain anonymity and link his anti-fascist mission with that of the Gunpowder Plot.
I’ve never understood this connection. Yes the king was an unelected tyrant oppressing a minority. But if the plot had succeeded not much would change. There would have been a tyrannical unelected catholic king oppressing the protestant minority.
I don’t know. Maybe it’s explained better in the graphic novel.
Some movie.
Which you should absolutely do yourself the favor of watching.
Everybody should watch some movie.
Thanks. I literally cannot tell you how riveting this conservation’s been. Interacting with you has been a rare pleasure that has really brightened up my day in a way nothing else in my recent memory has managed.
Wow, thats incredible. Thank you friend.
Hey, you earned it by virtue of your own merits, buddy. You hardly owe me thanks when you’re the one made the achievement.
Because of V for Vendetta.
